What is Eczema?
Eczema is a mildly treatable medical condition that causes patches of skin to become irritated, inflamed, and rough. There are many forms of Eczema, and while it cannot be fully cured, it can be treated to make living with Eczema no big deal.

Types of Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis, otherwise known as childhood Eczema, typically comes on in the early stages of childhood. AD can develop during adulthood and can be hereditary; however, it is more commonly seen within the first five years of a child’s life. Symptoms such as dry and cracked skin patches, rashes, swelling, and itchiness can occur in various spots on the human body. Eczema is a fairly common condition that affects roughly 30 percent of the population. AD does not have one single cure; while finding and removing an allergen may help, it cannot be fully cured.

Before After

Contact Dermatitis is much like an allergic reaction and occurs when the skin is inflamed due to a substance or allergen. Symptoms include rashes, itchiness, inflammation, and blisters. Treatment begins by determining what caused dermatitis and then putting steps in place to reduce and limit exposure to that substance. There are many common allergens, such as foods, antibiotics, fragranced soap, detergents, and lotions.

Dyshidrotic Eczema, also known as pompholyx, is a specific type of Eczema that tends to affect hands and feet by causing small, very itchy blisters that line the fingers, toes, and palms. The inflammation and blisters typically go away within a few weeks’ time; however, dyshidrotic Eczema can last throughout one’s entire life. Specific substances such as cobalt, nickel, and cement can be the cause, and simple things such as antibiotics and lotions can help control dyshidrotic Eczema.

Nummular Eczema, otherwise known as nummular dermatitis or discoid Eczema, creates scattered circular shaped splotches to develop. The patches can range from rough, dry, and cracked to moist, inflamed, and oozing. Nummular dermatitis can be caused by many factors, such as previous skin irritation, infections, or even stress. While there is no explicit timeline or cure for discoid Eczema, topical antihistamines or corticoids can help to relieve the pain and irritation.

Neurodermatitis is an itchy patch of skin that forms, and scratching creates a domino effect that leads to prolonged symptoms. Neurodermatitis is a chronic skin condition that gets worse every time it is additionally irritated. It begins as a patch of raised dry skin, and whenever it is scratched, it begins to itch worse. Oftentimes, this causes more scratching and more itching, and the cycle tends to repeat. When not further irritated, neurodermatitis can pass in a matter of a few weeks, and the skin may heal and go back to normal. Neurodermatitis typically affects more sensitive parts of the body, such as the neck, forearms, and neck.

Hand Eczema is one of the most common types of Eczema and is often mistaken for dry skin. Hand eczema has many forms and can often look chapped, dry, scaly, and inflamed; however, it can also burn, bleed, crust over, and ooze pus. Many treatments include various types of topical creams and ointments, as well as antibiotics and medicines taken by mouth.

Stasis Dermatitis is a common type of Eczema that occurs due to a poor or lack of blood flow, typically in the lower legs. Symptoms can include itching, redness, and swelling in the ankles and lower legs, as well as swelling and protruding veins. Leg elevation, healthy dieting, and exercising can help to manage and treat stasis dermatitis and eventually lead to the symptoms clearing and being non-effective.

Treating Eczema

There are many solutions and treatments for Eczema in all forms; some may include allergen identification, medication both topical and by mouth, light therapy, and skin moisturization. For the most instant gratification, topical creams can relieve pain and discomfort for short stints of time, while skin moisturization or light therapy typically takes longer to relieve painful symptoms. While allergen identification may be a step in the right direction, exclusion of that allergen from everyday life is needed to progress in healing and treatment.

Triggers (allergens) may include but are not limited to

  • Soaps, detergents, and lotions
  • Clothes or fabrics
  • Food or allergen consumption
  • Bacteria
  • Stress and sweating
  • Pet dander, pollen, or mold
  • Pollution
  • Sun exposure
  • Tobacco or smoke residue

Topical Therapies
Most Eczema can be controlled and treated by the use of topical creams and medications.

Corticosteroids: Is a widespread medication used for keeping Eczema at bay. It is available for purchase in many different strengths and can help decrease irritation, information, and discomfort.

Pimecrolimus Cream or Tacrolimus Ointment: This is typically not a first option and is used when corticosteroids can no longer relieve pain caused by Eczema. Pimecrolimus cream is a prescribed TCI (Topical Calcineurin Inhibitor) that is used in more sensitive areas of the skin and often paired with corticosteroids in other regions.

Coal Tar: Coal tar is used to help reduce swelling, heat, inflammation, and itching, like other treatments. Coal tar can come in many shapes and forms, such as gel, oils, bath salts, and, most commonly, creams.
