PSORIASIS & ROSACEA

Safe and Effective Compounding for Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic disease that affects roughly 7.5 million U.S. citizens and 125 million individuals worldwide. While Psoriasis is not permanently curable, treatment can help to reduce symptoms and discomfort; however, comorbidities such as Crohn’s Dieses, Cardiovascular Dieses, Psychological Disorders, Depression, and Heart Attacks can come at a higher rate for individuals who have Psoriasis.

What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a long-lasting autoimmune condition that appears when skin cells in the body are created at an amplified rate, causing raised patches of skin that then become dry, itchy, and scaly. Psoriasis is a fairly common disease that impacts around 3% of the global population.

The most common type of Psoriasis is called Plague Psoriasis; 9 out of ten individuals living with Psoriasis will experience these plagues throughout their lifetime. The patches of extra skin cells can appear anywhere in one’s person; however, the most common areas of the body are palms, elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. The patches’ size and inflammation can vary, but they almost always become itchy and discomforting quickly after appearance. Treatment can vary per the individual, but medications and topical creams can help to relieve pain, inflammation, and tightness.

Other than the exception of Guttate Psoriasis, which is seen in some young children, Psoriasis is known to be a chronic condition that cannot be fully cured throughout a lifetime. Therapy or counseling may be recommended to some, as a big part of treatment is identifying and removing causes, creating a regular care routine, and learning to live and thrive while still dealing with mild Psoriasis.

Before After

Psoriasis Pathogenesis
Psoriasis can be induced from the jump by both genetic heredity and autoimmune dysfunctions; however, not every individual that suffers from Psoriasis can tie it back to genetics. Individuals can also carry Psoriasis genes but never develop patches or plagues due to steering clear of potential triggers. Every individual who suffers from Psoriasis can and will experience various amounts of different stimuli. There is not one definitive cause, but avoiding known and potential triggers can help to keep flare-ups and inflammation at bay.

Triggers (allergens) may include but are not limited to:

  • Smoking
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Dry weather changes
  • Infections
  • Medications such as lithium, hydroxychlorouine, and prednisone
  • Stress
  • Insect Bites
  • Sunburns and other skin injuries

Treating Psoriasis
Proper management and identification of a patient’s condition make it plausible to mitigate potential effects and implement responsive treatment per the individual. Psoriasis treatment is a long-lasting process, but identifying triggers, implementing treatment, and accepting remissions can help a patient be on their way to not even remembering they live a chronic condition.

While Psoriasis typically responds well to treatment, remission can and may happen to patients and typically lasts around a year. It is important to remember that not all treatment is linear, and remissions can be as short as a month and as long as a few years. Most remissions are temporary, and treatment reassessments may need to take place in order to best manage the unpredictable nature of Psoriasis.

Topical Therapies
Various treatments come in over-the-counter form for mild psoriasis; however, it is vital to remember to introduce them in small controlled areas to prepare and prevent possible irritation and inflammation.

Coal Tar: Coal Tar is a standard treatment that is used to reduce discomfort, inflammation, swelling, itching, and flaking. It is made in various forms, such as oils, bath salts, shampoos, and ointments.

Hydrocortisone Creams and Ointments: Are used for both mild and severe flare-ups. For mild or small patches, hydrocortisone works well to decrease discomfort and itching. For more severe patches, prescription corticosteroids are advised. When the skin is severely dry, cracked, or bleeding, corticosteroids (ointments) tend to be more relieving than hydrocortisone (creams).

Moisturizers: Moisturizers that DO NOT include fragrances of irritants can help to soothe and relieve pain caused by Psoriasis. They allow dry and cracked skin to heal and have a constant buffer between the patches themselves and the air. Patients are advised to look for moisturizers with heavy oil and cream rather than everyday lotion. The more moisturizer that is applied, the better; but once a day is a bare minimum prescription for patients suffering from Psoriasis.

Anti-itch Products: For most individuals, the most discomforting part of Psoriasis is the constant itching. Treatment typically removes the itchy feeling, but until treatment alleviates the discomfort, anti-itch creams can do the trick. Creams such as Benadryl, Calamine lotion, and Hydrocortisone have been proven to help relieve the itch that comes along with Psoriasis patches. It is important to also note that overuse of anti-itch creams can cause irritation and dry skin, so patients are advised to use caution when applying said creams.

Scale Softeners: Active ingredients such as urea, lactic acid, and salicylic acid can help to soften scaly skin and decrease inflammation in Psoriasis patches. Scale softeners are primarily used for Psoriasis that develops on the scalp, as removing the top squamous layer allows for creams and ointments to help relieve discomfort more efficiently and effectively. Similar to anti-itch creams, overuse can negatively affect an individual and create a more dry and itchy path than before. Use caution when treating Psoriasis with scale softeners, and consider taking a short warm bath before application for best results.

Prescription Treatments Include:

Corticosteroids: Are typically used to help manage mild to moderate Psoriasis. Oftentimes, symptoms such as itching, swelling, and redness are mitigated by the application of corticosteroids. They are also used a lot in severe Psoriasis treatment plans as they help to slow the amplified skin cell production.

Tazarotene: Is used to decrease discomforting symptoms, slow skin cell production, and reduce the scale of Psoriasis. Tazarotene is a form of retinol derived from Vitamin A, and it is often prescribed alongside a corticosteroid to help relieve severe irritation.
