What Supplements Are Good for Milk Production While Breastfeeding?

A mother’s milk is nearly perfect food for your new growing bundle of joy. Maintaining a healthy balance of diet and nutrition while supplementing may help increase the flow of milk production.  Some new mother’s may have a hard time producing milk flow after a few weeks because they may not be drinking enough liquid or supplementing with the right vitamins for your babies nutrition.

Some vitamins that are low in breast milk are vitamins A, D, and C.  Taking a general multivitamin is both beneficial for mother and baby as it contains a lot of necessary vitamins and milks for milk production and stress.  When looking for a good multivitamin, be sure to look for one that contains an absorbable amount of vitamin B complex with extra folic acid (400mcg daily). Taking the recommended amount of vitamin D and fish oil as which your doctor’s may be recommending.

Breast milk is primarily produced from protein that comes from your diet or the protein that is stored in your body.  Mother’s will need to increase their protein intake but be sure to consume the calories from fats and carbohydrates.  Breast milk also contains high amounts of inositol, a B vitamin that plays an important role in infant development. Another suggested herb is blessed thistle which may also be called St. Benedict thistle or holy thistle.  The primary parts that are used are the flowers, leaves and stems.  The nutrients that the blessed thistle contains are calcium, essential fatty acids, magnesium, potassium, selenium, zinc and the full B complex.  Anise is another suggested herb that helps aid in milk production. Some of the nutrients that this herb contains are calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, B complex and Vitamin E.  It’s mostly found in seed or seed oil form.

Fenugreek is one of the most commonly used herbs for increasing milk production. Supplementing fenugreek may cause body secretions, including urine, to smell like maple syrup.  New mothers that want to increase breast milk production should aim for 500-1000mg of fenugreek capsules a day.  If taking this supplement, moms may notice an increase in one to three days. Lastly, Brewer’s yeast is a nutritional supplement rich in a variety of vitamins such as chromium, selenium, B vitamins and protein.  Its primary use is used for baking, brewing beer or wine, but some new mother’s may be using this yeast to help produce milk production.  You may take up to 2 to 3 tablets 3 times a day, or you can bake with brewers yeast powder to make lactation cookies or add 1 to 2 scoops of the powder to your favorite beverage and drink it once a day.

Like with any supplement or medication, you may want to discuss your options with your healthcare professional or even reaching out to a Certified Lactation counselor before taking any new products while breastfeeding.
