Your skin is your largest organ…why would you not want to protect it? In the busy world we live in, there are so many factors that affect our skin. Age, stress, and environment are just a few. With so many factors that are out of your control, it becomes even more important to take the proper steps in protecting yourself. Before making any decisions about what products you should use, it is important to understand what type of skin that you have. A skin-care professional should consider four variables when determining your skin type.
First, the color of your skin is considered. This will range from white skin, which can burn easily and never tan, to dark, black skin which will not burn, and everything in between. When assessing the color of your skin, your pigmentation is also taken into consideration. Pigmentation can be a visible sign of overall health as it can be drastically effected by illness, creating hypo-pigmentation (pale) or hyper-pigmentation (darker) skin. It is important to pay attention to your pigmentation and changes you may see in this as a sign of other health concerns.
The second component in determining your skin type is the thickness. The thickness is based on the depth of the layers of skin including the epidermis, the dermis, the subcutaneous layer, and the stratum corners (dead skins cells). The thinnest, most delicate skin on your body is typically the eyelids, so be sure to give them the care they deserve.
The third part of assessing your skin type is determining whether your skin is oily, dry, or normal. This is based on the amount of oil that is secreted in the skin.
Lastly, the laxity, or “sagging skin,” is the last component addressed when identifying skin type. This can identify a breakdown in collagen and elasticity and/or thinned or damaged skin.
