Aluminum hydroxide is commonly used to reduce phosphorus levels when the kidney is not performing appropriately. Aluminum binds to dietary phosphorous in the intestines and helps in elimination from the body. This does not treat chronic kidney failure but with dietary modifications, it can extend the animal’s life and alleviate pressure on the kidneys.
Aluminum hydroxide has had favor due to being relatively inexpensive, effective and well tolerated. It does not have much taste or smell so most cats and dogs will eat the dry gel powder when simply sprinkled on food.
Constipation can occur in some cases but generally well tolerated and no serious side effects shown. Ask your veterinarian or pharmacist about drug interactions since there are a number of medications that absorption is decreased if given within 2 hours from aluminum hydroxide.
This product has been unavailable to my knowledge since the beginning of this year but Pharmacy Solutions has been able to keep an inventory of the powder. This can be supplied for your animal either in its original powder form, or compounded into a capsule or flavored suspension to help with palatability. Please call us if you have any questions.
Dosing for Dogs & Cats: 30-90mg/kg/day. Evaluate serum phosphate levels in 10-14 day intervals
