Synapsin for brain health?
What is Synapsin?
Synapsin® is comprised of ginsenoside Rg3, nicotinamide riboside, and inactive ingredients used to aid in absorption and distribution. Ginseng and ginsenosides have been shown to improve learning and memory as determined by behavioral analysis by a mechanism involving alteration of synaptic plasticity (strengthens synapse between neurons) and an increase in neurogenesis (generation of neurons), thereby affecting neuronal density (Kim, 2013). What this means is ginseng is thought to strengthen the synapse between brain cells and create more neurons, which are the cells that send and receive signals from your brain.

Synapsin FAQs
Synapsin® contains two main ingredients: ginsenoside RG3, nicotinamide riboside. It also has a number of other ingredients used to help increase absorption and solubility to maximize the effectiveness of the product. We compound this product with vitamin B-12 called methylcobalamin.
Ginsenoside RG3 comes from Panax ginseng and laboratory studies report it can decrease inflammation in brain cells called microglia. Nicotinamide riboside is a form of B3 with laboratory studies report increased mitochondrial functioning (the workhorse of cells), neuroprotection and increased NAD+ levels. NAD+ levels typically decline as we age.
: Synapsin® is normally compounded into a nasal spray. The nasal spray can cross the blood-brain barrier to affect the microglial cells much more effectively than other dosage forms such as oral therapy. It is important for the medication to reach those cells to help with inflammation directly.
Dosing is normally recommended to start with one spray into each nostril once daily. The patient can be instructed to increase the dose up based off symptoms and results up to a maximum of no more than two sprays into each nostril three times daily.
What possible side effects can I expect from this medication?
Although this medication is typically well tolerated, side effects that may occur include headache and stinging/burning in nostrils.
To help with stability, it has been found best to store this medication in the refrigerator. Delivering a cold nasal spray dose can contribute to the previously mentioned side effects so rolling the bottle in your hands may help minimize these side effects.
The product is red in color because of the B-12. Mentioning this is important to notate that the nasal spray is not causing nose bleeds.
The key is inflammation of the brain. The diseases stated before all have similarities in that they all have inflammation (acute or chronic) that is causing mental/cognitive impairment. Certain patient populations may find more favorable responses but this could be helpful for most people. There generally is an inverse relationship between age and mental health, so as we age our mental health tends to decline. Advanced age and stress could justify the ability for this medication to help one’s cognitive function/memory.
This medication requires a prescription from a licensed practitioner. The pharmacists at Pharmacy Solutions are happy to discuss Synapsin® with your practitioner and give medical literature detailing its use.
