Chloramphenicol For Dogs
Chloramphenicol, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the ribosomal subunit. It has an effective range covering bacterial complications such as respiratory and urinary infections but may be slightly limited due to potential side effects. Dogs have been extensively studied with treatment of chloramphenicol. Chloramphenicol therapy can be given to other species but it is prohibited in food producing animals. It has been associated with aplastic anemia in humans, thus should be handled with care. Side effects include gastrointestinal upset, allergic reactions, and bone marrow suppression. Regular monitoring of blood parameters are recommended during treatment to assess hematologic abnormalities.
Chloramphenicol has been shown to work within the first several hours of initiation of the product and effective against opportunistic and anaerobic bacteria such as MRSA, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Mycoplasma and Brucella. Oral administration has been shown to have peak serum levels just 30 minutes after dosing (Plumb, 2018). This highly lipid soluble product can be placed in a flavored oil suspension or capsules since dogs are not typically difficult to pill.
Pharmacy Solutions in collaboration with local veterinarians have successfully treated a number of canine patients with Chloramphenicol so please reach out with your needs.
