Supplements that can boost your memory

The human brain has about one billion neurons that combine to help create and store memories. There is no limit to the amount of memories we can store in our brain, but we can only remember a certain amount of memories in our “short term” memory because it has a much smaller capacity. Short-term memory is also called working memory because it retains information that you can access immediately to operate daily. Long-term memory, however, can hold a vast amount of information for long periods of time.

Of course, there are many reasons why we have memory loss ranging from age-related memory loss to dementia. Age-related memory impairment (AMI) is the forgetfulness that occurs naturally with the aging process. This is the result of neglect on the body and brain such as lack of nutrition, hormonal imbalance, and lifestyle issues such as lack of exercise. AMI is the most common form of memory lost affecting over 16 million people ages 65 or older. It can occur as temporary lapses which are considered “brain farts” in which you can’t remember something and then it suddenly snaps back to you. Another form of memory loss is mild cognitive impairment (MCI). It is an intermediate stage between age-related memory impairment and dementia. MCI is characterized by a high degree of brain damage and neuron damage. Lastly, another form of memory loss is dementia. Dementia involves progressive loss of brain function that is common in people over 65. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia and is characterized by a decline in the production of acetylcholine and it is considered a progressive disease which means it gradually worsens over time.

Memory loss can be frightening but there are supplements that help optimize your mental acuity and boost your memory. A popular supplement taken is fish oil as the omega fatty acids guard against factors of cognitive decline. In addition to boosting your memory it can also moderate your blood pressure and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. Omega fatty acid docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are usually found in fish oil and DHA is a structural component of the brain tissue. DHA promotes cognitive function and memory by encouraging the growth of neurons. Another popular supplement that can be taken is vitamin E. Studies have shown that patients with dementia had low vitamin E blood levels and so taking vitamin E could help maintain cell production in the hippocampus where memory is stored. In regards to neuron communication in the brain, zinc is a wonderful supplement used to assist and regulate communication between the neurons. Low zinc level is associated with a risk of Alzheimer’s disease as it interferes with neurotransmission. All these supplements can be found here at Pharmacy Solutions and with a healthy lifestyle, you can strengthen your memory effortlessly.
