The Top 5 Vitamins for Women

At Pharmacy Solutions we believe patient health should be demystified and simplified. Ask us a question any time and get a straight answer. We take pride in being personal, supportive and fair, not corporate. Here are some of the questions we’ve been asked about women’s vitamins.

What Is One Supplement You Recommend for Everyone?

A question I have been asked over and over the past few years is, “What is one supplement you recommend every woman to take?” While I understand the thought behind this question, the real answer will vary a lot of times depending on her medical information and lifestyle. Our bodies are complex and should be treated based on what those complexities are.

Top 5 Supplements for Women

I am going over the Top 5 Supplements that I recommend for women. Remember, these can vary from person to person and what works for one woman may not for another. I believe you should always talk with your healthcare provider to ensure you are taking the best care of your body. These 5 supplements serve as a backbone and many women may need to add to this list or take away depending on their health concerns and health goals.

Magnesium

Magnesium has got to be one of my absolute favorite minerals to talk about. With magnesium’s role in over 300 different chemical reactions in the body, it is no wonder this mineral made the list. Magnesium can be considered “nature’s chill pill” and can help aid in relaxation and sleep. However, this important nutrient is lacking in many women. More than half of Americans are deficient in magnesium. You can start by taking 100-200mg of magnesium before bed to help with relaxation and better sleep. Another reason magnesium is so important is the role it plays in your levels of Vitamin D3 which brings us to our next supplement.

Magnesium can be considered “nature’s chill pill” and can help aid in relaxation and sleep.

Symptoms of low magnesium:

  • Anxiety
  • Back pain
  • Chest tightness
  • Decreased appetite
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Memory loss
  • Muscle cramps

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 is a hormone that your body produces after absorbing the sun’s rays. However, in today’s world, many women are not getting outdoors as often to absorb the sun’s rays so they may make more vitamin D. Winter months can also be a time when vitamin D may drop in the body so it is always important to supplement if you are low.

Symptoms of low Vitamin D in women:

  • Decreased calcium levels
  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Mood changes, like depression
  • Muscle changes

Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to our bodies. They are deemed “essential” because we need them for proper health but cannot produce them on our own. Omega-3 fatty acids are required for several body functions, from proper blood flow to brain development. These long-chain fatty acids are integral components of tissues and organ systems throughout the body, including the heart, skin, joints, eyes, and immune system.

Our typical American Western Diet foods lack Omega 3s. With heart disease, depression, and Alzheimer’s on the rise, supplementing with a pharmaceutical Omega 3 fish oil is extremely important for all women.

Symptoms of low Omega 3 for women:

  • Memory decline
  • Craving fatty foods
  • Depression
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Impaired immune response
  • Increase in arthritis
  • Inflammation
  • Mood swings

Probiotics

Over the past few years, many have been learning the importance that your gut plays in your health and a good way to start taking care of your gut begins with probiotics. Probiotics are the good gut bacteria that your intestines need to increase their defenses fighting off disease. Probiotics also play a huge role in digestion, healthy weight, mental health, and stress management.  Our guts can get out of whack from things like stress, inflammation, birth control pill, antibiotic use, and poor dietary choices.

Probiotic deficiency symptoms:

  • Anxiety
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Food allergies and sensitivities
  • Gas
  • Skin problems (acne, eczema)
  • Sugar cravings

Multivitamin

If you are just getting started with adding supplements to your regimen, a multivitamin can be a great place to start. In a typical American Western Diet that is filled with high-calorie foods with little to no nutritional value, a multivitamin will be able to provide you with a backbone of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. All of which help support your body and supplement what you may be missing every day. Be sure to look for a pharmaceutical brand multivitamin so you get the best absorption and the proper forms of these vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Not all Multivitamins are created equal.
